Augacephalus junodi
Augacephalus junodi
size 1/2”
Described in 1904 by French naturalist Eugène Simon as a Pterinochilus species. It was then moved to their own new genus in 2002 when Richard Gallon created the Augacephalus genus. There are currently 3 species in the genus, with A. junodi being known for their extreme sexual dimorphism in the size difference between males and females. Adult females are a solid 6 inches while the mature males are only a little over a inch. It’s quite impressive to see the males mate with the females. These spiders are found in burrows in the grasslands of south Eastern Africa.
