Classic hobby spider, known for years to collectors as Grammostola pulchra, aka the Brazilian black tarantula. However this spider has been sold under the wrong label for years, and it’s only now becoming popular to label them as they should have been. But make no mistake, pretty much everything that is or has ever been sold as G. pulchra, is really Grammostola quirogai that originated from Uruguay stock. Same great spider known for its gentle demeanor, just a new label. Grammostola quirogai was described in 2016 (Montes de Oca, D'Elía & Pérez-Miles), so it was incorrectly assumed that this hobby spider was Grammostola pulchra, until a new paper came out in 2023 (R. S., Bassa, P. G., Zefa, E. & Bianchi, F. P), redscribing and updating the range of the previously poorly described G. pulchra. We now know that the better fitting name for this species in the hobby is Grammostola quirogai.
One of the best pet species and a favorite among new collectors. Easy to keep, long lived terrestrial species that have an awesome overall black velvet appearance.
