These spiders are the original Huntsman spider as they were the type species for the genus Heteropoda. Originally described as Aranea venatoria all the way back in 1767 by Swedish taxonomist Carl Linnaeus. These spiders are sexually dimorphic upon maturity and reach a leg span of well over 3 inches in some cases, depending on their locality. This species originated in Asia, however it’s slowly been introduced to many places all over the world and is quite wide spread these days.  

Fast spiders that will make your fastest tarantula looks slow. When asked what is a good beginner Huntsman spider, I usually say, “there is no good beginner Huntsman spider, they are all fast AF. But H. venatoria is a manageable sized species, priced for someone wanted to get a little experience before acquiring more exotic and expensive species.”
