The king baboon tarantula is the largest and most gnarly tarantulas on the African continent.  Reaching 9 inches as adults, the burrowing monsters are known for their loud stridulation, or “hissing” sound that they produce when they are annoyed.  These are by far one of the most intimidating tarantulas when they are standing on their hind legs warning to keep your distance.  Described in 1885 by German entomologist Ferdinand Karsch. These spiders have become hard to find over the last few years.
