This rare Phormictopus is fairly new to the U.S. Most of what has been sold in the past as P. cautus turned out to be Phormictopus sp. “purple” from the Dominican Republic. This spider is the real Phormictopus cautus from Cuba. This reddish-maroon colored spider should be kept like others in the genus, in a typical tropical terrestrial type set up. This a smaller species of the genus Phormictopus only reaching a little more than 5 inches or so as adults. An uncommon species and difficult to find authentic ones from Cuba. This species has yet to be bred in the USA as of 2025 making them a great breeding project. These are well started and starting to show great color! Described in 1875 by Austrian naturalist Anton Ausserer.
