Sericopelma melanotarsum 1”
Sericopelma melanotarsum 1”
size 1”
Sericoplema is a large Central American genus that is often overlooked. These incredible spiders can reach around 7” inches or more, and grow quite quickly. Sericopelma melanotarsum has never been offered in large numbers in the hobby, and it’s been some years since we’ve had them. This terrestrial Costa Rican species make a great addition and display a bright colored flash on their metatarsus that the name of this species comes from. This marking can fade a bit in older females, but is quite noticeable most of the spiders life. Probably the most interesting thing about this species is the sexual dimorphism in the mature males. They turn a pinkish tan color and get a strange over all fuzzy appearance. Completely different than the females. I was quite surprised the first time I saw a mature male. This species was described in 1980 by Costa Rican biologist Carlos E. Valerio.
